Coffee Britt in Costa Rica kicked off the first stage of its reforestation plan part of its corporate social responsibility commitment; volunteers planted native trees in the Toucan Rescue Ranch situated in Nazareth, Sarapiquí.

“Toucan Rescue Ranch, our partner on Hábitat Sloth coffee, has welcomed our volunteers on numerous occasions for projects such as maintenance, painting murals, and reforestation. Perhaps the most popular, however, was the sloth release”, explains the press release.

Sloths are taken to the Toucan Rescue Ranch to recover after being victims of road accidents, being attacked by other animals, electrocuted or even illegal commerce. Rescued sloths go through a rehabilitation program with the objective of releasing them back to their natural habitat.

“Sloths feed upon and live in specific trees, and, by reforesting with these species, Toucan Rescue Ranch is giving the released sloths an even better chance to survive and thrive in the world. Café Britt employees dug right into the task—literally—and planted 150 trees, including cacao, tucuico, and guarumo, a sloth favorite. That makes a total of 300 trees planted by Café Britt volunteers.”

In 2018 a total of 46 adult sloths were received at Toucan Rescue Ranch, 25 of which were released back to nature, it is expected that this year some 92 sloths will require attention and of these close to 50 will make it back to their habitat. When it comes to orphan baby sloths, in 2018 a total of 40 were taken in.

The movements and reincorporation into the forest of released sloths is monitored closely through one of the tracking collars purchased by Café Britt.
