177 people are infected with coronavirus in Costa Rica, the group includes 103 men and 74 women, 159 Costa Rican and 18 foreigners. The patients’ age range goes from 2 to 87 years, but the majority are adults. Four patients remain in the intensive care unit.

The Costa Rican government maintains the yellow alert and insists on maintaining all sanitary measures during the next few weeks until the peak passes, this includes closure of schools, bars, casinos, dance clubs, churches, and, as of today, beaches. Restaurants and other places of gathering must maintain their occupancy to a maximum 50% of their capacity.

The country closed it’s borders last week and is not allowing foreigners to enter the country. Vehicle transit from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. is restricted.

Costa Rica is currently on what is known as “phase 3” of the transmission as established by the World Health Organization, which means there are sporadic cases or small clusters of disease in people, these have been identified and isolated and therefore has not resulted in human-to-human transmission sufficient to sustain community-level outbreaks.

So far, the health authorities have identified 6 clusters and the origin of almost all of them is known and clear which allows better control of the virus and helps avoid larger transmission.
Some of the cases remain, however, under investigation.

The Ministry of Health insisted in maintaining all sanitary measures and called on the population of “young adults” to practice social distance since currently people in intensive care range between 36-54 years of age and out of these two do not have any known risk factors or underlying health problems.
