The earthquake that affected Mexico City this September 19 at this point and according to reports has claimed the lives of over 225 people, collapsed buildings, and several damages. Considering the tragedy and complicated situation, several airlines are waiving change fees on flights to and from Mexico City.

American Airlines, United Airlines, Copa, Aeroméxico and Avianca are some of the airlines that have announced through their websites and social media channels their policies in this regard.

Avianca, for instance, confirmed that as of today and through September 26 travelers who already had tickets to or from Mexico City will be able to make changes without any additional charges or fees to travel through October 31, 2017, except from dates of October 1-17.

Delta, on the other hand, stated: “Due to the earthquake in Mexico City, Mexico, travel to/from/through the city below might be impacted. Check flight status frequently for up-to-the-minute info about your flight plans Even if your flight is not canceled, you may make a one-time change to your ticket without fee if you are scheduled to travel to, from, or through the following destination(s) on Delta, Delta Connection®, or Delta-coded flights during the specified time periods listed below. Tickets must be reissued on or before September 23. When rescheduled travel occurs beyond September 23, 2017, the change fee will be waived. However, a difference in fare may apply. Final travel must be completed by end of ticket validity, one year from date of original issue”.

American Airlines, Copa Airlines, and United are also waiving fees and any difference in fare if the rescheduling can be made by September 23.

Aeroméxico reported they are running normal operations, however, they recommend checking your flight ahead of time; the airline is also waiving fees for changes made in tickets that had scheduled flights through September 21; flights can be rescheduled through October 31st, 2017. Aeroméxico is not charging fees for the transportation of rescue animals or baggage fees to rescue teams.
