The Costa Rican-North American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) considers the call of labor unions an “irrational and irresponsible position”, considering the need that the country has on making decisions to recover the fiscal stability. “The Costa Rican-North American Chamber of Commerce condemns this action and asks the Government to take all the administrative and legal measures against people that take part of this movement”.
“If the threat of the labor unions materializes, this implicates the interruption of public services, affecting the basic needs of the society, the daily tasks of the citizens and the productive activities, generating damages to the economic activity in a moment where we should be showing coherence and bravery to get this country out of the worrisome fiscal situation. AmCham demands that, on Monday, all public institutions that see their operations affected immediately declare the movement, which is not a strike, as illegal”, says AmCham’s press release.
“We cannot question the citizens’ right to protest, however, this movement is unnecessary, ill-timed, and disrespectful. The movement does not qualify as a strike, and cannot be defined as such, because it does not pursue the economic or social wellbeing of the workers, a direct collective conflict with an employer has not been formally declared to justify a strike as it is required by law. This is a movement with political motives of groups that want to destabilize the country and our institutionalism, simply because they do not agree with the fiscal reform that is in process in the Legislative Assembly”, commented Elias Soley, President of AmCham
AmCham considers irresponsible that labor unions intend to qualify this movement as a strike “creating confusion for the public servants”, and believes the only way to find solutions and understand the national reality is activating respectful dialogue.
The chamber recommends that companies inform their workers of this movement to avoid delays or problems in their daily work and activities, implement a flexible schedule if necessary, and when possible allow employees to work from home following the company’s regulations.
