An American fugitive who has been on the run for nearly 20 years was deported to Miami from Nicaragua on Saturday, escorted by officers of the United States Marshals Service.

Robert Allen Lopez, 49 was arrested by Nicaraguan authorities on November 14^th, 2015, after entering the Central American country illegally on foot, a U.S. Marshals spokesperson told the Association Press.

Authorities have not said whether Lopez crossed into Nicaragua from Costa Rica, to the south, or Honduras, from the north, nor in which country or countries the fugitive had been hiding for nearly two decades; though Lopez narrowly escaped capture in Mexico in 2000.

In December of 1995, Lopez pleaded guilty to federal Medicare fraud charges in Miami. Lopez established fake companies that filed false Medicare claims totaling more than $4.3 million on behalf of patients for services that were unnecessary or never provided, according to U.S. officials and the AP. Lopez subsequently fled after being freed on bail.

“The arrest of Robert Allen Lopez demonstrates the commitment of the U.S. Marshals and our federal, state and local partners to pursue those wanted on an international level,” said U.S. Marshal Amos Rojas Jr. in a statement. “Crossing global boundaries to avoid prosecution is no longer a viable option with the substantial resources and law enforcement cooperation in place.”

Lopez will appear before a federal magistrate on Monday, according to the AP.
