AT&T Inc., the Dallas, Texas-based multinational telecommunications conglomerate, was granted a 10-year data transfer and leased line license last week by Costa Rica’s telecom regulator Sutel, reported Costa Rica’s Spanish daily La Nación today.

This newest operator in Costa Rica’s telecom market will not offer services to individual consumers, rather will “Focus on offering business services to multinational corporations operating in Costa Rica,” said Eduardo Farinelli, vice-president of business services sales for AT&T in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean to La Nación.

Farinelli said to La Nación that Costa Rica is a “very important market” due to the presence of the multinational corporations based in the country.

AT&T is the second largest provider of mobile telephone and the largest provider of fixed telephone in the United States.

In 2013, the company hired two new sales leaders to boost their sales in Latin America, according to the company’s website.

The lease allows AT&T to provide data transfer services on the country’;s fiber optics network for a 10-year period, according to Sutel.

This will allow AT&T to provide services within Costa Rica to their existing U.S.-based business clients who have operations here, explained La Nación.

AT&T will be able to participate in future bids held by Sutel if they decide to expand their services in Costa Rica, concluded La Nación.
