A 12-year-old student from the Liceo de Costa Rica (Costa Rica High School) was ran over by a track maintenance wagon on February 28 close to the high school in Plaza VIquez, San Jose.

Sebastian Diaz had apparently left the school to go have lunch and was scheduled to return to class later that day. The accident occurred close to 11:55 a.m., product of the same one of his legs was completely amputated while the other was partially amputated, although the teen was still alive when the ambulance arrived he died shortly after.

The driver of the train stated that he honked the horn several times but Sebastian instead of stepping away walked to the center of the railroad.

According to local news site Craldia.com a witness of last name Guzman, stated that some other students where challenging Diaz to get on the train tracks and others were insulting him and daring him to do it.

Officers from the Judicial Investigative Police (OIJ) are gathering evidence, testimonies and checking the cameras available in the area to get the true version of what happened.

According to the director of “student life” from the education institution, Kattia Grosser, Diaz had  “normal” behavior at school “Classes began just three weeks ago, he was about to turn 13, he was in seventh grade, he was a regular student, he seemed happy and had his friends”.
