The whale watching season begins in the South Pacific of Costa Rica and national and foreign tourists have been posting their videos of the impressive mammals on social media and these go viral very quickly.

The spectacle of humpback whales and dolphins during the months of July through October with a peak in September increases tourism to the South Pacific, particularly the area of Uvita and the National Park Marino Ballena, but also Puerto Jimenez in Golfo Dulce.

According to data by the Costa Rica Tourism Board the number of tourists that visit this area of Costa Rica triplicated from 2010 to 2013 going from over 43 thousand visitors to more than 131 thousand.

The annual dolphin and whale festival 2017 will kick off September 15 and run through October 1st at the Marino Ballena National Park with multiple activities to celebrate the arrival of this amazing animals.

The National Park organized this year the recollection of plastic bottles to reuse them with the purpose of creating a plastic whale sculpture as a way to raise awareness on the problematic of single use plastic in the world. Artists Alban Corrales is in charge of the sculpture of 9 meters in length and took on the task with the help of many volunteers.

According to MarViva Foundation in Costa Rica 120 tons of plastic a day end up in the oceans; raising awareness and taking steps towards eliminating or limiting the consumption of single use plastic is of importance to every country in the planet.
