The best Costa Rica has to offer is probably not in San José, instead it’s the coasts and the different natural attractions what most want to see; yet, some tourists choose to stay in San José for a few days to get familiar with the capital city and the urban lifestyle, others come in for business and they need a good lodging option.
There are many hotels in San José, it is important to consider the purpose of the trip and the areas to be visited since traffic in Costa Rica tends to be a little crazy, make sure to pick a hotel that is near your destinations, distances are short but traffic can be bad. The following list includes hotels that are great for both, business or vacation, they offer great service and all needed amenities, we included hotels in different key points of the capital city and nearby cities:
Grano de Oro Hotel: This boutique hotel is conveniently located in San José, just a few blocks away from the main avenues of the capital city. The Tropical Victorian Style gives the hotel a sense of warmth and unique comfort, small but beautiful, the restaurant here is famous for its delicious meals. Another hotel in this area that is a good alternative will be Parque del Lago Hotel.
Hilton Garden Inn San José: Right across the Costa Rica national stadium in La Sabana, the location is very convenient to travel to different areas of San Jose, well maintained rooms, beautifully decorated, a great relation price/quality. The restaurant offers a delicious variety of dishes, and the service is very good.
Barceló San José Palacio: Located in La Uruca, San José, this hotel has been around for many years and it is the preferred spot of many tourists and business men/women. In order to get in and out of the hotel it is necessary to seek transportation, but its location is great since it’s near everything. Good food, a small bar, in general good facilities.
Radisson San José: In the heart of downtown San José. If you want to explore the capital city, then this is one of the best hotels in the area. Another option, if you choice is to stay in center of San Jose, would be President Hotel.
Holiday Inn Express: When it comes to hotels close to the international airports, this is one of your best options. Located just 5 minutes from the Juan Santamaría airport in Alajuela, rooms are comfortable and clean, very basic services, and the price is reasonable. It is located next to a Denny’s restaurant, a RostiPollos (local rotisserie), and the Fiesta Casino.

Marriot Hotel: Located in San Antonio de Belén, Heredia about 10-15 minutes from the International Airport, this hotel is beautiful, friendly staff, great restaurant options. An amazing place to stay, it is also in a great area, just take into consideration wherever you go you’ll have to go by car.
If you need alternatives to the west of San José (Escazú and Santa Ana):
Real Intercontinental: This is a luxury hotel, located right across the Multiplaza Escazú Mall, you can’t go wrong with the Intercontinental but naturally the prices are high. Other alternatives nearby but more affordable include: Marriot Courtyard (also within a shopping center, very convenient) and Sheraton San José Hotel, which has a wonderful rooftop restaurant and bar and a Casino.
Studio Hotel: Right behind the very busy street of Lindora, Santa Ana, Studio Hotel is a good choice if you are in a business trip and your clients are in this zone.
Options for the east side of San José (San Pedro and Curridabat):
Boutique Hotel Jade: Small restaurant but very charming, this hotel has everything you need, including delicious food. Situated in San Pedro.
Hyatt Place Pinares: A good choice for those traveling for business, conveniently located next to shops and restaurants in the area of Curridabat, Plaza Momentum.
