A total of 5.38 km (3.35 miles) of bicycle track should be ready by February 2017 in San Pedro, Montes de Oca confirmed the mayor of this town Marcel Soler who also confirmed the Municipality is studying the possibility of extending the bike paths to other areas in the county in the future.

The path consists of three different tracks, one will connect the Law Faculty of the University of Costa Rica to Los Yoses, and from there to San Jose and finally reaching La Sabana, this route will be built by the San Jose Municipality.

The second track will communicate the American University (UAM) with 55th street between 2nd and 5th avenues; while the third section will connect Roosevelt Plaza and Los Yoses to the Plaza de la Libertad de Expresión in the University of Costa Rica; for this last path 30 commercial parking spaces will be eliminated, affecting Lehmnann Bookstore, Il Pomodoro Restaurant and Fito’s Bar.

The construction of this bicycle path has an approximate cost of $1million dollars, which include the paint, signs, and the installation of barriers to avoid the invasion of cars; an improvement of the existent bike patch is also contemplated.

This project hopes to promote the bicycle as a means of urban transportation and is an incentive of the Municipality, supported by different urban cyclist groups that hope to develop politics of sustainable transportation.

One of the challenges revolves around making sure that the bike lanes are respected by pedestrians, cars and motorcycles, since the existent bike paths are constantly invaded.
