Today, in the early morning hours, a man was discovered lying along the side of the road with stab wounds in his stomach in the center of Puerto Viejo, a tourist beach town in the Atlantic coastal province of Limón, reported judicial investigative police (OIJ) press officials this afternoon.
Some passerbys reported the incident to local Bribri regional police office, who are preliminarily describing the incident as an assault and robbery.
The man, who was found dead by the OIJ, was identified as a 58-year-old Canadian man by police who responded to the report, who have also reported his name as Bruce Craig McCalum.
Police have determined that the man was traveling with a group of tourists from Canada who have been in the country since February 19, and that he was a photographer.
Group members said he had mentioned wanting to get some sunrise photos. The man apparently ventured out early this morning to try to capture some images when it seems he was the target of a violent robbery, as his backpack and equipment were missing.
OIJ officials are conducting an investigation to attempt to determine those responsible for the murder.
Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family and friends of this Canadian man who so sadly and unexpectedly lost his life today.
