The Central America Birding Trail is the name of a project developed by Birdwatching Central America and Operador Latino two companies that focus on bird-watching tours and that wanted to create a new option for birding fans.

Around 1500 species of birds can be spotted in the Central America region, from Guatemala and Belize to Panama.

Sergio Arias, director of Birdwatching Central America explained that the fact that Central America is of relatively short extension in comparison with other regions, and the increase in the number of low-cost airline options, make Central America the perfect area for this type of activity.

The project will be presented at the British Birdwatching Fair which takes place in Oakham, England, August 18-20 as well as in the American Birding Expo from September 29 to October 1st in Pennsylvania, USA.

The idea is to provide birdwatching fans with different alternatives to enjoy birding to the maximum in this region; whether it is in just one country , the north or south triangle, or hopping from country to county.

Those interested in taking the complete tour have to consider it involves between three to four weeks; this time is enough to be able to spot somewhere between 600 and 800 species of birds according to Arias.

Each of the countries part of the Central America Birding Trail picked a bird species as its icon, they chose species that are not as popular, as is the case for Costa Rica of the Fiery-billed aracari (Pteroglossus frantzii; the Spot-crowned Barber (Capito maculicoronatus) for Panama, among others.

The trail takes birdwatchers to hotspots in the different countries; Mountain Pine Ridge in Belize, Atlit

This project will increase Eco-tourism, and benefit many communities in the different Central America countries.
