The government of Costa Rica proposed the organization of a joint commemoration of the Central American Independence Bicentennial (Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica).

Costa Rica’s initiative presented during the meeting held in the Dominican Republic, seeks to promote a historic celebration from the multiculturalism and diversity of the region. It includes defining the priorities of SICA to achieve concrete progress towards 2021 and define the challenges and necessary institutional reforms for the efficiency of the organization.

Vice-President Epsy Campbell explained that the idea is to incorporate within this project the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which has 17 objectives to put an end to poverty, fight against inequity and injustice and face climate change.

Also during the SICA council President Carlos Alvarado, spoke of the social and political crisis in Nicaragua, highlighting the urgent need to identify a route that allows a negotiation to the crisis.

“Costa Rica, just as the rest of the international community, considers that the organized, transparent and urgent dialogue is the only way for calm to return and a pacific way out to the internal crisis in benefit of the democracy”, said Alvarado.
