A male administrative assistant who works for the Ministry of Public Education (Spanish initials: MEP) is currently under investigation for an incredibly long list of sexually harassing statements he allegedly made to female co-workers over three years.

According to investigative journalist Angie Guerrero of online news daily CRHoy.com, details of the investigation was first made public in La Gaceta, which is the official publication of the government of Costa Rica, earlier this week. Ms. Guerrero contacted the suspect, who was actually not aware of the publication in La Gaceta; however, it suddenly dawned on him as to why he had been assigned to another position within MEP about a year ago, and his new desk is apparently located in a spot very, very far away from his alleged victims.

What makes this sexual harassment investigation peculiar is that the suspect seems to think of himself as a silver tongued fellow, but whose purported statements are not only tone deaf but also uncouth to the point of sexual vulgarity. Another interesting aspect of the investigation is that the suspect’s repertoire of indecorous and thinly veiled utterances just kept getting more and more vulgar as years went by.

The Costa Rica Star has chosen to not publish the suspect’s name herein, but his alleged statements are worth reviewing in chronological order:

The sordid state of affairs seems to have started circa 2012, when victim #1 claims she was surprised by the suspect as he walked into her office and exclaimed:

“I’ve come to visit you because you seem to be so alone.”

At the end of the school year 2013, the suspect allegedly told the victim and a male co-worker a jocosely sexual story that made both listeners visibly uncomfortable, yet the suspect was too clueless to notice the displeasure.

For victim #2, her ordeal started while she was in the field, specifically at a public school graduation. She claims that she received a call on her mobile phone, and she thought she heard the voice of her father calling her, and thus she answered:

“Hello, Daddy?”

As it happened, it was actually the suspect calling; he replied

“yes, please call me Daddy.”

Five days later and at his office, the suspect allegedly asked victim #2:

“so, will you still call me Daddy?”

A week passed, and victim #2 had to visit the suspect’s office for a work-related matter; she hesitated to enter, which prompted the suspect to say:

“come in, come in please. What is it? Are you scared? Have not met a man like me before?”

From that point on, the double entendres from the suspect increased. On one occasion, he needed to transfer files from his USB drive to victim #1’s computer, and he commented:

“let me stick mine in because I know it’s clean.”

Months later, the suspect made a mistake in denying a permit to victim #1, and the suspect apologized for the error but then added:

“Pretty women such as yourself should learn to ask things nicely because, in such fashion, nothing will be denied. You stare me down with piercing eyes and I feel like saying no.”

Unfortunately for victim #1, she needed the suspect to sign off of yet another permit to attend a meeting. The suspect did not fumble the authorization this time, but he supposedly added:

“You can go, but you should first go home and change. You look too pretty with that outfit and someone may steal you away from here.”

Victim #1 felt that it was time she said something, and thus she mentioned that her husband would be at the meeting with her; alas, this only seems to have inspired the suspect, who absentmindedly stated

“Wow, no… It is better for you to go the meeting now because I can only think about the things your husband can do to you and I can’t… Wow, no… go to the meeting, don’t worry about it.”

Human resources managers at MEP transferred the suspect shortly after the above-mentioned incident. It took weeks for him to surmise that something was afoot. He approached victim #1 and casually asked if, by any chance (!), she had complained about him. She did not indicate so, and thus the suspect shrugged and ingenuously carried on. That was about a year ago.
