The Comptroller General of Costa Rica published its resolution in which it determines that the company Meco S.A. complies with all legal requirements to be awarded the construction of an underpass that will replace the roundabout known as “Rotonda de las Garantias Sociales”.
The appeal had been presented by the company FCC Construction America S.A. back in February.
This resolution allows the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), administrator of the project, to subscribe a contract for $17.6 million for the construction of this underpass that will have 6 lanes (3 in each way); although it involves only 500 meters it will have n impact on 840 meters of the east sector of the beltway (circunvalación) road.
“The resolution of this appeal gives us green light to begin this work as soon as possible. We have talked to UNOPS and they share, in the same measure, the need to accelerate as much as possible the beginning of the works that will benefit the populations of Curridabat, Desamparados, Zapote and San Pedro, to mention just a few of the communities in the East of the capital city”, stated Rodolfo Mendez, Minister of the Public Works and Transportation.
It is estimated that close to 56,000 vehicles use this road on a daily basis.
