The StubHub Center of California State University, home of the Los Angeles Galaxy of the United States Major League Soccer, was the stage for the opening match of the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup for the National Football Teams of Costa Rica (La Sele) and Jamaica (the Reggae Boyz). The match took place in a stadium that was nearly half empty, with most fans rooting for Costa Rica

La Sele dominated the game offensively from kickoff with well-executed attacks by Bryan Ruiz, Joel Campbell and Celso Borges. Jose Miguel Cubero was also instrumental in advancing the ball from the midfield to the strikers. After a few incursions by Costa Rica, the Reggae Boyz peeled off on a quick offensive run that ended up with a long inbound pass and a costly mistake by the back line defenders, who somehow allowed Garath McCleary to find a lose ball right in the box and convert it in the first goal of the match.

Down by one within the first 15 minutes, Costa Rica looked nervous on the pitch and resorted to long shots on goal that were easily handled by Jamaican goalkeeper Miller. Johan Venegas and Joel Campbell became sluggish as the Reggae Boyz tried to put together offensive plays that did not go too far. The match turned boring at this point as Costa Rica kept making mistakes and Jamaica tried to capitalize on them.

At the 32-minute, mark, just when coach Paulo Cesar Wanchope was about to make a desperate substitution, Roy Miller scored the equalizer on play that started with a free kick by Bryan Ruiz, who faked a cross with a ground pass, which Borges turned into a fly ball for Miller, who was unmarked and thus able to convert a header.

Six minutes later, a very long pass from Borges to David Ramirez ended up in the Jamaican net as neither goalkeeper nor defender could clear it. With a 2 – 1 score in favor of Costa Rica, coach Wanchope sent Elias Aguilar back to the bench. Although La Sele was ahead, the style of play was sloppy and hesitant.

In the second half, the Jamaican team quickly tied the match on the first possession with a solo run by Joel McAnuff easily dribbling past the four-player back line and star goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado, whose only two actions of the match at that point ended up in goals against Costa Rica. After this surprising goal arrived just three minutes into the second half, La Sele switched to aerial play with offensive headers by Ramirez and by Venegas, who would be substituted by star striker Alvaro Saborio on his 100^th cap for Costa Rica.

Although La Sele dominated the second half in terms of possession, Jamaican goalkeeper Miller was able to handle the incursions and long-distance shots on goal. The Reggae Boyz took advantage of the weak defense and sent Esteban Alvarado flying a couple of times. At the 22-minute mark, team captain Bryan Ruiz had virtually disappeared from the pitch and was substituted by the young attacking mid-fielder Elias Aguilar.

By the 30-minute mark, Costa Rica attempted to find Saborio; however, La Sele was running out of steam at that point. Both teams turned desperate and were able to put together exciting plays that woke up the crowd in the seats of the StubHub Center. In the end, however, no further goals were scored by either team, which means that they will be paying close attention to what happens between the national football teams of Canada and El Salvador.
