A Costa Rican bus driver was arrested by Nicaraguan Army soldiers on Sunday after the discovery of US $467,000 in cash in a hidden compartment above the driver’s seat of the bus he was driving, authorities in Nicaragua report.

The cash was contained in 16 packages of $20 and $50 bills, according to who authorities, who identified the driver as 32-year-old Luis Alberto Corrales Jimenez.

The discovery was made during a roadblock and subsequent search in Sapoa, Rivas, just 4.5 kilometers from the Peñas Blancas border crossing with Costa Rica.

Corrales was driving the bus, operated by the Central Line bus company, on a return trip to Costa Rica, authorities said. Two other bus company employees who were on the bus were also taken into custody. Both are Nicaraguan nationals.

Central Line provides regular passenger bus service between San Jose and Managua.

Corrales remains in custody in Nicaragua as authorities investigate the case. The man is reportedly a resident of Heredia.

In a separate incident on Saturday, the Nicaraguan military intercepted a go-fast boat carrying 125 kilos of cocaine just off the coast of San Juan del Sur, a beach town popular with tourists in southern Nicaragua.
