“The Government of Costa Rica strongly condemns the use of violence in students and citizens on the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAM)”; the Costa Rican government made the statement this Sunday when ten people were killed and dozens more wounded in clashes in Nicaragua.

“For decades Costa Rica has dedicated to promoting peace and liberty, democracy and development, for this reason it cannot remain silent regarding the escalating violence and repression in Nicaragua which has taken the lives of over three hundred victims and a high number of wounded people.”

“The forced disappearing, the arbitrary detentions, the intimidation against protesters, media outlets, students, defenders of human rights and members of the Catholic Church are inadmissible actions that must come to an end.”

“What happens in Nicaragua directly affects the entire region in migratory, social, economic and humanitarian actions, for this reason Costa Rica demands prompt reactions to attend this dramatic crisis.”

Costa Rica exhorted the Government of Nicaragua to immediately cease fire and comply with the recommendations of the Inter-American Human Rights Commission (CIDH), during the General Assembly of the Organization of American States and two sessions of the Permanent Council in Washington.

“Costa Rica defends the right to protest anywhere in the world, and in this sense, has promoted along with Switzerland the approval of the resolution of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva with the purpose of protecting the human rights in the frame of pacific protests.”

President Carlos Alvarado will share his concern over the situation in Nicaragua with Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations during a meeting this Monday.

“Costa Rica reiterates its conviction that compromised and effective dialogue is the road towards a solution to the crisis that affects Nicaragua”.‘

“Once again, we express solidarity with the Nicaraguan citizens, with who it shares historical bonds.”
