Costa Rica is the only country in Central America that accumulates ten years of uninterrupted electrical service, while the other five countries in the region accumulate 13 total or partial blackouts in the last seven years, according to the Regional Operator Entity (EOR).

¨We estimate that just one total blackout of the National Electric System, that would require close to three hours to reestablish the service, would generate losses of ₡8.400 million colones (almost $15 million USD)¨, explained Luis Pacheco, Electricity Manager of ICE (Costa Rica´s Electricity Institute)

Stability is sustained by the energy accumulated in the regulation reservoirs the country has (Arenal, Cachí, Angostura, Pirrís, Reventazón), along with the seven national thermal plants.

¨The generation, transmission and distribution systems have reached a stability that guarantees electricity if the highest quality in the entire territory, quality that along with the competitive rates have attracted industries of high technological profile¨ stated the press release.

Data provided by ICE, indicate that Costa Rica generated 99.06% of its electricity for the first trimester of 2017 from renewable sources. In 2016 the country closed with 98% of energy produced from clean energies, while in 2015 this indicator was of 97%.

The guarantee of a stable electricity is a direct benefit for the productivity of the industrial and commercial areas, as well as for the population and institutions in general.
One of the main factors to reach this stability has to do with the specialization of the personnel that supervises the complex network of elements of the National Electricity System all year long.
