As of Saturday May 24th Costa Rica registered 918 confirmed cases of Covid-19. This number includes 425 women and 493 men, out of which 757 are Costa Rican and 161 are foreigners.
607 people are already recovered, and 15,093 have been tested and discarded. 15 patients remain hospitalized out of them, 4 are in intensive care including a 27-year-old.
The Minister of Health, Daniel Salas, explained that 30.4% of positive cases in Costa Rica are related to travel (referred to as “imported cases”), while 24.5% generated from work related contact and 20.3% from within the family circle.
13.3% come from social gatherings, 3.5% are classified as “others” and 8% are under investigation.
“It is important to reinforce the preventive measures in work spaces, since within family circles it is common that the transmission exists once there is a positive patient, it is also important to continue limiting social gatherings”, insisted the Minister.
The health authorities also informed of a case where a patient that had tested positive on Match 27, the nexus was registered as an “imported case”. That patient then tested negative on April 9th but in the second test carried out 24 hours later to confirm the recovery the result was positive again. The person was then tested again in April 14rh and once again the result came back negative, but 24 hours later the test was positive once more.
Finally, on April 21 and April 22 the two tests came back negative, the patient however continued to experience loss of taste and smell senses and presented fever on May 14, for these reasons a new test was carried out and the result was positive.
Dr. Salas explained that the case is under investigation and being followed closely but no classification can be given yet.
