The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Costa Rica, stated through a press release on Sunday evening, their position regarding the presidential elections that took place in Venezuela that same day.
“Costa Rica does not recognize the legitimacy of the electoral process carried out this Sunday, May 20 in the Republic of Venezuela”.

Costa Rica considers the election processed lacked transparency since the beginning anddid not comply with the international standards of a pluralist, democratic and transparent electoral process.

“We express our profound concern that the electoral process did not have the participation of all political actors, or independent international observants, which weakens democracy. At the same time we ratify our unbreakable commitment to democracy, the fundamental liberties and the State of Law based in a robust institutionalism as guarantee”.

“The Costa Rican government recognizes the value of dialogue for the reestablishment of essential elements for the Venezuelan community to have a representative democracy”.

As a result of the elections, President Nicolas Maduro was reelected, obtaining 68% of the votes casted which represented 46% participation. The results were not recognized by candidates Henri Falcon and Javier Bertucci.

The election process was also criticized and the results not recognized by the United States, Canada and the European Union as well as ten Latin American countries
