David Guzman, a talented midfielder who has previously been called up to play for the National Football Team of Costa Rica, spent Sunday night in jail after a quarrel with an expat fan.

According to a news report filed by Gustavo Arias, Steven Oviedo and Daniel Jimenez of national newspaper La Nacion, Mr. Guzman got into an altercation with a fan during a family day event at an athletic field near Dulce Nombre, province of Cartago.

Mr. Guzman plays for the defending First Division Champion Deportivo Saprissa, one of the most legendary football clubs in Costa Rica and Central America; he is a key figure in the midfield, but he will not be called up for the next semifinal match against Liga Deportiva Alajuelense (LDA) due to this situation.

The reported version of the events explains that a 27-year old fan from Nicaragua approached Mr. Guzman and launched a harsh critique of his performance during the first semifinal match against perennial rival LDA.

Mr. Guzman allegedly did not take kindly to being insulted and responded with his fists. The expat fan would later throw rocks at the footballer’s car, which exacerbated the situation.

Mr. Guzman did not get a chance to be interviewed by prosecutors on Sunday, which was a paid holiday due to Labor Day, and thus he spent the night behind bars. He was scheduled to speak to prosecutors on Monday morning.

The aforementioned match was won by LDA at home 2 – 0, but it left a sour note among many Saprissa fans. The LDA goals were not made by any of their star players; they were both opportunistic plays, but what has Saprissa fans more incensed is that the club’s midfield and forward lines looked inefficient.

The next match will be played on Wednesday night at the Ricardo Saprissa Stadium in Tibas, located in the northern suburbs of San Jose.
