If you have had the fun experience of driving in Costa Rica you’ve probably already had your share of encounters with one or many dangerous potholes.

It’s actually difficult to find a road in Costa Rica in perfect conditions, and if you find one it probably will not last long, potholes are responsible for at least 20% of car failures according to AutoPits; from flat tires to damaged rims, suspension or alignment problems, these are just some of the problems that vehicles suffer with these inevitable encounters.

With this problem in mind a group of citizens got together to start the initiative “Craterlandia” or “Craterland” (crater is a word popularly used in Costa Rica to refer to a big pothole), which names the different potholes in the streets of Costa Rica that don’t only damage vehicles but that also represent a danger to drivers and cause accidents.

With names such as “Crater Valle Ancho” followed by a description: “Its length and width make puts it in the Top 3 of the region. It’s origin is still unknown, but the damage that it causes to a car’s shock absorbers is the most feared in the city” or “Crater Dos Lagunas” (Two lake crater) “This double crater was discovered by a pizza delivery explorer, when he fell in it and discovered that in its depths hid two small lakes of a beautiful dirt color”

Each pothole gets a sign similar to those found in National Parks. The purpose of this initiative is to bring to the attention of the Presidential Candidates the problematic of the road conditions in the country.
