The Juan Santamaría Airport in Costa Rica had to suspend its operations this Saturday as a consequence of the national blackout.

The electric service was interrupted at 1:15 p.m due to a failure in the Regional Interconnection System; this problem is also affecting Nicaragua, Panama and even Guatemala.

All flights coming in and out of the country are either delayed or suspended for now, confirmed Enio Cubillo, director of Civil Aviation.

The Costa Rica Electricity Institute expect to reestablish the service gradually throughout the afternoon and hope to have everything running normally by 6:30 p.m.

According to Cubillo, the Liberia airport continues to operate normally. The operations at Juan Sanatamaría Airport will return to normal as soon as the electricity is reestablished.
