The Costa Rican Judiciary sent out a message yesterday mourning the death of another woman at the hands of her partner.

The Observatory on Gender Violence Against Women and Access to Justice is a relatively new judicial agency dedicated to tracking violence against women, making legal and court services available to women who are victims of violence, and to observing the judiciary’s response to this phenomenon in Costa Rica.

The observatory’s statement is translated as follows:

“We regret, once again, the violent death of a woman.
This time in Las Palmas, Los Guido de Desamparados, San José.

May she rest in peace.
Our condolences go to her relatives and friends.

With this, so far this year, according to our records, twenty women have died as a result of violence.
Of these, nine have been classified as femicides.

In Costa Rica, from 2007 to 2016, on average, two women per month died in femicides.
But this year, sadly, we are breaking our record with an average of three femicides per month.

They are women who died at the hands of men who believed they were the women’s owners, who willfully decided to end the women’s lives when these women tried to defend their right to a free and non-violent life.

Every time a woman dies, we lose a mother, a sister, a daughter, a granddaughter …

Her death is everyone’s problem … Let us not destroy our country.”
