Costa Rica offered to host the 2019 United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 25) that is scheduled to take place December, 2019, after Brazil withdrew due to budget problems.
The sites for the Conference of the Parties (COP) is usually defined three years in advance for the country to have enough time to organize the event; the 2019 event was supposed to be hosted by Brazil, however, due to the recent government change an the problems that country is facing they expressed they do not have the necessary conditions at the time to host the event.
“It is for this reason that Costa Rica, after analyzing internally the possibility with the Climate Change Convention Secretariat and other strategic partners, wishes to analyze the possibility of hosting this event”, explains the press release.
According to the Minister of Environment and Energy, Carlos Manuel Rodriguez, the government will be analyzing carefully this possibility while they attend the COP 24 this upcoming week in Poland.
Aside from Costa Rica, only Barbados and possibly Bahamas have expressed their interest in hosting this event.
In order to be picked there must be an agreement between all the Latin American and Caribbean countries.
“For an organization such as this, Costa Rica would have to come up with 20% of the resources and 80% would be provided by International Cooperation, and of course in collaboration with bilateral and multilateral cooperation”.
“The benefits of hosting this event are many for the country, such as the possibility of positioning our Decarbonization Plan and our route towards this goal. We could also push more ambitious projects in the area of Climate Change and Decarbonization of the world economies”, added the Minister of Environment.
The results of the negotiations will be given in the upcoming months.
