Costa Rica Plans the Reactivation of Train to Puntarenas

Ministry of Planning and Economic Policy (MIDEPLAN) gave the Costa Rican Train Institute (INCOFER) t total of over $560 thousand dollars to carry out the necessary feasibility studies of the or the project of reconstruction of 131 kilometers of train track between Alajuela and Puntarenas.

The reactivation of the Train to the Pacific” is one of the key projects of Incofer framed within the Institutional Strategic Plan 2019-20123 along with the Electric Passenger Train of the Grat Metropolitan Area and the Electric Load Train of Limon.

The funds will be destined to feasibility studies, market and risk analysis, financial evaluation, design and budgeting, and the formal proposal for the execution of the project as well as equipment, among others. These actions must be carried out within a seven month chronogram and through public tender.

“We are sure that this will contribute with the economic reactivation of the area and the generation of jobs, it also means giving a new step towards having an active and operational train to the Pacific, a legacy of our grandparents”, commented Elizabeth Briceño, executive president of Incofer.

INCOFER estimates that putting this service, which was constructed between 1898 and 1910, back in operation will require an investment of close to $80 million USD.
