The Meteorological Institute (IMN) in Costa Rica warns of another cold front that will be affecting the country as of this weekend.

“A strong cold front is located right now over the Gulf of Mexico, and will continue advancing towards the Central American territory today”, states the report.

According to the IMN’s forecast, it is expected that this phenomenon will affect the country starting on Saturday night, with strong north winds that will bring down the temperature in the whole territory and will increase the rains in the Caribbean and the North Zone, as well as the Central Valley.

Strong winds like the ones experienced in the past week will be felt once again and could reach in mountain areas 90-110 km/h and 70-90 km/h in the rest of the country.

The cold front is expected to continue through at least Tuesday with rainfall of variable intensity that could reach 60-150 mm in periods of 24 hours in the Zona Norte (North Zone) and the entire Caribbean region. The Central and South Pacific could receive an accumulated 10-33 mm in 24 hours and in Guanacaste rains will be intermittent.

It is expected for the temperature to go down considerably, particularly in the Central Valley where the maximum temperatures will reach between 16⁰C-21⁰C (60⁰F – 70⁰F) affecting mostly on Sunday and Monday.

The Meteorological Institute insists on precautionary measures in areas that are vulnerable to landslides and floods. In National Parks and forest areas where the strong winds could cause branches or trees to fall, and tourists at the different beaches since the strong winds make swimming and navigating risky due to big waves and strong currents.
