As informed by local news site, CRHoy.com, the Costa Rican government has plans to open an embassy in Stockholm, Sweden by end of this year or beginning of 2019.

Epsy Campell, Vice-President of Costa Rica and Minister of Foreign Affairs, confirmed the information to CRHoy and also talked about the possibility of opening an embassy in Finland, however this will not happen in the near future since the fiscal deficit the country is currently facing does not allow it.

One of the reasons to consider the presence in these two countries is the interest of Costa Rica in receiving cooperation in the field of education, since these countries are known for the great quality of their education.

“The Swedish model has given extraordinary results in the field of public education and social inclusion. Having an embassy there makes a lot of sense, in order to have an exchange of knowledge, experiences and direct cooperation”, stated Campbell.

Currently, the Costa Rican embassy in Great Britain is concurrently accredited to Sweden. And the Swedish embassy in Guatemala is concurrently accredited to Costa Rica. Consular relations between Costa RIca and Sweden began in 1881. The first consular agent in Sweden was named in 1883 and the first Swedish diplomat for Costa Rica received his credentials in 1936.
