Mar. 23, 2016 / PRZen / NEW YORK — Costa Rica’s Institute of Tourism (ICT) will launch its 2016 promotional tour of the United States with visits to San Francisco on March 29, Los Angeles on March 30 and San Diego on March 31.

Organized by the Pro Imagen Costa Rica Group, the entity in charge of the country’s image as a tourist destination in potential markets, the educational sessions aim to answer “What makes Costa Rica such a Unique Tourism Destination,” and will facilitate one-on-one meetings between leading members of the country’s tourism community and U.S. travel agents and tour operators. The Institute will present the latest news regarding the country’s infrastructure.

One of the most biodiverse nations in the world, Costa Rica makes up just 0.03% of the world’s surface but is home to 4% of its flora and fauna. Costa Rica’s Institute of National Biodiversity reports that while Brazil has 6.5 plant species, 0.2 bird species and 16.9 types of mammals for every 380 square miles, Costa Rica is home to, comparatively, 238.8 types of plants, 16.9 bird species and 4.6 types of mammals in the same amount of space.

Long seen as a leader in sustainable tourism, the country has been able to attract a specific type of visitor: ecological travelers interested in experiencing and proactively participating in the maintenance of the country’s natural beauty.

According to ICT, 2015 was a highly successful year for Costa Rica’s tourism industry, with the country’s tourism intake increasing by 9% – almost triple the increase of the nation’s GDP, which increased by 2.8%. Nearly $3 billion came into the country via tourism; $246 million more than in 2014.

Costa Rica saw a 5.5% increase in international arrivals, with 2,665,608 visitors entering the country through it various ports; including a record 1 million visitors coming from the U.S.

According to Costa Rican’s Minister of Tourism, Mr. Mauricio Ventura, almost 600,000 people in Costa Rica depend, directly or indirectly, on tourism.
