Two United States citizens tried to leave Costa Rica through the Juan Santamaria Airport with a kilogram of ketamine hidden in baby powder containers.

According to the Ministry of Public Security, officers from the Drug Control Police intercepted the suspects at the Juan Santamaria Airport, two men of last names Santoyo, 35 years-old and Morales, 38 years-old.

The drug which is used as an anesthetic in animals, is consumed in a variety of ways and is more powerful than many other drugs. Ketamine is also commonly used as “date-rape” drug with one gram of this substance having an approximate value of 5 thousand colones (under $10.00) according to the Costa Rican Drug Institute.

The two foreigners were planning to take a plane to San Diego, California.

An Italian citizen of last name Righini, and 48 years of age, was also arrested at the Juan Santamaria Airport, officers noticed the man having a suspicious attitude while he was going through the security controls, when they decided to question him they immediately noticed he was not feeling well and he was immediately taken to the hospital where they found he was carrying 65 cocaine ovules in his stomach.

Righini had to undergo surgery where they extracted all the ovules containing 542 grams of cocaine.
