A suitcase with containers of baby food and cereal was found by the police inside vehicle used to kidnap a child this past Thursday in Santa Ana.

The child was rescued by his father who intentionally crashed the car of the perpetrators to prevent them from running away with his son.

“This confirmed the intention of the detained suspects was to kidnap the child with the intention of requesting a ransom later”, commented Walter Espinoza, director of the Judiciary Investigative Police (OIJ).

“This is not a group that is in the streets randomly kidnapping minors. This is a group that defined and selected an objective according to an economic interest”, affirmed Espinoza.

Preliminary investigations confirm there is no relationship between the victims and the kidnappers, the police continue to investigate the case and how they targeted the family.

The suspects arrested are a 38-year-old man of last name Mirc and of French nationality and a 22 year old Nicaraguan woman of last name Oporta. Mirc registers migratory activity in the country since 2005 while Oporta first entered the country in 2008 and is a resident in Costa Rica, both of them apparently worked in real estate.

“Over the last few months we have had more kidnapping events than usual. This is not something that just happens spontaneously, it has a lot to do with the social situation in the country, with the distribution of wealth, the increase in criminality and its a rather common situation in other nearby countries”, concluded Espinoza.
