Costa Rica Coastguard officers came across between 800-1000 kilograms of cocaine floating about 60 kilometers from Golfo Dulce in the South Pacific, confirmed the Ministry of Public Security (MSP).

The National Coastguard Service was patrolling the area on Thursday afternoon when they found the cargo tied to a radio buoy.

The cargo included 44 packs which the police estimate could weigh between 800 kilos to a ton.

The authorities are investigating the origin of the cargo, but considering the way the packs were found it makes the case difficult.

This is not the first time something like this occurs, back in July 22 also in the waters of the South Pacific, authorities had found 55 packs of cocaine, sealed and tied. The police could not make any arrests in this case either.

Back in September 28th the Guatemala Army reported to have found 281 kilos of cocaine hidden in the submerged part of a vessel that had left Puerto Caldera in Costa Rica and that had Mexico as its last destination.

The ship “Cap. Palmerson” left Puerto Caldera in route to Puerto Lázaro Cárdenas both in the Pacific, the drug was found by divers from the Pacific Naval Force and the same was hidden in the vessel’s hull.

Central America is a strategic territory for drug trafficking operations from South America to the United States, the biggest market for cocaine.

Costa Rican authorities have accumulated close to 20 tons of cocaine seized so far in 2017.
