The Costa Rican Public Polce Force rescued two live sea turtles that were being transported inside a vehicle in the area of Moin in Limon.
The discovery was made during the night patrols when at 2:20 a.m. of Wednesday the officers noticed a suspicious vehicle, which they ordered to stop, this is how they found two live sea turtles one on the back seat of the car and another on inside the trunk of the car both on turned on their shells and tied by their flippers with ropes.

Police officers coordinated the transfer of the sea turtles to the Marine Turtle Conservation Project of APM Terminals in Moin, where both reptiles were examined and cared for until they were able to coordinate with personnel from the Ministry of Environment to set them free.
The car was seized since it did not have the necessary documentation and the driver of last name Membreño was arrested and faces up to three years in prison for the capture of the animals.

Sea turtles are often captured and killed to extract their eggs and eat their meat, an illegal practice since these animals are protected by the Protection, Conservation and Sea Turtle Population Recovery Law.

The Public Police Force also reported they have seized in under one week a total 834 turtle eggs in different operations, one of them near Perez Zeledón where two men were carrying 144 tutle eggs; a second case in Savegre when a man was carrying 200 eggs obtained in illegal manners; a third case was detected in Garabito, Puntarenas where three people carrying over 400 sea turtle eggs were arrested, and finally another case in playa Hermosa where a man had 82 eggs that apparently were extracted from the Wildlife Refuge.
