The Costa Rican Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE, in Spanish) ordered the national treasury to return some US$3.4 million (about CRC1.85 billion) to the general government fund, as announced by the agency in a press statement.

The monies correspond to funds disbursed for the country’s 2010 presidential and municipal electoral processes, and which were not used.

The TSE’s resolution, 7040-E10-2016, detailed that the nearly CRC1.85 billion are for

CRC17,75 million in withholdings for two political parties for debts to the social security fund which the parties later settled, and CRC1,83 billion in funds that were not used or that were not approved as part of expenditure reports submitted by political parties.
