A group of students of the University of Costa Rica created a deodorant that slows down the growth of underarm hair.

The product, which they named Nuvelo, has a natural component which helps in the long term weaken the hair follicle. The deodorant comes in roll-on presentation and it also moisturizes the skin leaving it soft, it was created by Pharmacy students, Maria Fernanda Chacon, Gabriela Hidalgo, Sofia Valenciano and Priscilla Paniagua.

“Coming to find out that 95% of Costa Rican women between the ages of 16 to 24 shave their armpits inspired us to create a product in roll-on presentation that was easy to apply. With the help of the teachers we were able to vary the proportions and quantities of each component until we found the right combination; the roll-on has a 100% natural component native of Costa Rica”, explained Maria Fernanda Chacón.

This innovation is the result of an assignment to create products not currently found in the market. Four products were created by other students: an non-oily anti-frizz (Offrizzi), a pocket concealer for dark circles with higher Omega 3 and 6 than other products in the market; a nutritional supplement meant to reduce high cholesterol levels; and last but not least, a lotion that combines anti-inflammatory properties and healing action.

The product to eliminate the frizz without leaving it oily was the work of Oscar Arguedas, Softia Staikidis and Carolina Rodrguez, who worked with an existing product, Argan oil , they analyzed it and created a completely new composition with two plants native of Costa Rica with the objective of strengthening the properties of the oil and adding antioxidant components. “Our product has other advantages; it adds shine, hydrates the hair leaving it soft and promotes its growth”.

“Some of the products already have investors. The initiatives that still don’t have financial backup will continue to receive the help of the School of Pharmacy so they can begin their own entrepreneurship or can partner with small or medium size businesses to consolidate their ideas”, stated Doctor German Madrigal, professor coordinator of the area.
