Living in Costa Rica actually has a lot of pluses, it’s a beautiful country with an amazing weather, nice people, there’s no army, and you can choose to live in a modern city with all its comforts or a rural town surrounded by nature.

But just as any other country, Costa Rica also has problems, living here is not always fun… so what do Costa Ricans’ want for Christmas? I certainly can’t speak for all of them, but there are several things that would probably make the wish list of most Costa Ricans.

Dear Santa,

Although I am grateful for living in a peaceful and blessed country there’re a few things that can certainly improve, since politicians keep promising changes but the progress is little or null, I thought you’d be able to help, here’s my letter for this Christmas, wishing the best for this great country and its people.

 Traffic: This is probably the hardest request but the most urgent one, please enlighten those in charge of approving new plans and infrastructure for this country, make them aware that having 15 toll booths in a highway that only has three lanes really doesn’t help the situation; that widening a street for 500 meters until we reach a one or two lane bridge doesn’t make any difference either, and make them aware that road work can be done at night or weekends specially in streets of high traffic. Mudslides and floods in newly built streets are not acceptable either.
 Taxes: No more taxes, Costa Rica is expensive as it is. New taxes won’t solve the country’s financial problem when Treasury is not even capable of properly collecting the existing taxes. Cuts can be made in the government institutions that will help the country save money. Luxury benefits, inefficient institutions, etc. find a way that doesn’t involve putting more weight on the shoulders of the regular citizen.
 Elections: Is this it? These are our options? Eeny, meeny, miny, moe… please let’s choose the best of all… and enlighten the chosen candidate to guide the country in the right path for the next four years and put the congress members to work for real instead of arguing over meaningless things.
 Accidents with the Train:Maybe Rudolph’s red nose could help in this case. In Costa Rica there are over 100 crashes involving the train every year… you’d think by now drivers should know to look both ways and listen for the whistle when going through a railroad crossing, but, apparently not. Help please.
 Corruption: No more cement scandals. We’ve had all we can take for a year and it’s turning out to be quite embarrassing.

I am sure there’s much more to add but for now this should help a lot.
