Results of a poll conducted for the Costa Rica digital news outlet Elmundo has found that 84 percent of Costa Ricans support sex education being taught in schools.

The findings from the OPol Consultores poll are similar to results of the Second National Sexual and Reproductive Health Survey carried out by the Ministry of Health in 2015 which found 85 percent supported sex education, said Elmundo.cr.

After the Ministry of Education announced the incorporation of a mandatory class on the topic for 10th graders starting next year, a protest was held by a small group of religious followers who said they felt “the guidelines are far from Christian principles.”

The July poll showed that 13 percent of respondents opposed students receiving the subject of sex education at school, while slightly more than 2 percent had no opinion or did not respond.

The news source contracted OPol Consultores for the survey in which people were polled over the phone from July 25 -27; the study has a margin of error of 2.9 percent.
