President Carlos Alvarado was received by the Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) during a  meeting today at the headquarters of the institution in Washington, DC.

Alvarado centered his speech around the situations currently affecting Nicaragua and Venezuela.

“The main achievement of the General Assembly of this Organization was to channel the analysis of the challenges in terms of democracy and human rights, in particular in the cases of Venezuela and Nicaragua, along the multilateral and regional path.“, commented Alvarado.

Alvarado also made emphasize in the urgent need for the Nicaraguan government to comply with the recommendations of the Inter American Human Rights Commission and stop repression and deaths to be able to resume dialogue.

“The violence in Nicaragua is for Costa Ricans a wound in their own skin, considering the historical, economic and family bonds that unite us with this nation”, assured the President.

The Costa Rican President also expressed his concern over the institutional and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, “It is necessary to continue to search for consensus, necessary within the organization to effectively respond to the crisis and produce positive changes in every aspect”.

“We must use all the tools of multilateralism that we have at our disposal and we must be able to offer common, clear and conclusive answers that help find the solutions to crisis situations. We must understand that the basic premise to collective safety is to agree on the threats and the way to confront them”.

In the closure of his speech Alvarado mentioned that when the democracy, fundamental liberties and human rights are violated, the security of the inhabitants and the peace in the region are at risk, for this reason he called on doubling efforts to handle safety with a human vision that constitutes and consolidates spaces that allow the social and economic development of the nations.
