Costa Rican Francisco Fonseca had his first experience fighting in a huge stage, this was evident for the first two rounds of his fight against Davis, he looked nervous and anxious.
What the public didn’t know was that Fonseca had a bad experience right before getting in the ring, something he ate made him sick, despite this, he gathered his courage and fuled by his dream he made his way to the ring.
After two awkward rounds Fonseca finally seemed to get a hold of his nerves (or stomach), he started studying the situation and the dance began. At this point Davis, although up in the cards hadn’t shown anything worthy of his “future of boxing” status.
Davis was mocking Fonseca in round 4 (a fighter that weight by 2 pounds losing his title should treat the sport and his opponent with more respect than that), and this was the best round for the Costa Rican who was able to score good punches.
The fifth round came with Fonseca getting more aggressive, he seemed more comfortable at this point, but Davis defense kept him from scoring more efficiently.
The dance continued with both boxers exchanging over rounds six and seven.
Round 8 came along and Fonseca went down after Davis punched him to the back of the head (rabbit punch) an illegal and dangerous punch that was not called by the referee and then he punched him again when Fonseca was down.
The referee made the count and gave Gervonta an undeserved KO win, the crowed knew it and booed the decision of the referee.
Gervonta didn’t look like the future of boxing, but like the future Adrien Broner.
Fonseca may have lost this one on the paper, but he showed courage and heart, he won over the audience and hopefully will get another shot soon with more than a three week notice and an overweighed opponent.
