Agents assigned to the Alajuela Regional Delegation of the Office of Judicial Investigations (Spanish initials: OIJ) are investigating the death of a 53-year old man who was found dead upon landing in Costa Rica. The 53-year old man has been identified as a Costel Comana, a wealthy Romanian citizen.

In an institutional communique, OIJ agents provided preliminary information on the case, which indicates a possible suicide. Comana was traveling with a companion, who has only been identified as a 35-year old woman. These travelers were due to land at the Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO), located in Alajuela; their flight originated in Bogota, Colombia.

The Avianca flight departed Bogota at 8:00 pm and landed in Costa Rica at 9:05 pm. Avianca is one of the busiest carriers in Latin America, and this was one of its routine flights. According to the OIJ, the woman who was traveling with Comana indicated that her companion was very nervous throughout the flight and got up from his seat quite a few times to use the restroom.

At some point, the woman fell asleep and woke up to find that Coman was no longer in the seat next to her. With five minutes left before landing in Costa Rica, she went to look for him in the restroom. After knocking repeatedly without any response, the woman asked a flight attendant for assistance. Once the door was finally opened, they found the lifeless body of Comana, who presumably took his own life.

OIJ agents summoned the medical examiner to transport the departed Comana to the judicial morgue in San Joaquin de Flores, where an autopsy will be performed while agents continue to investigate the case.
