Bruxism is an involuntary and unconscious condition that prompts individuals to grind their teeth, usually while they are sleeping. There are four main symptoms ofbruxism: morning headaches, earaches and worn-down teeth.
The American Dental Association (ADA) defines bruxism as a habit of forcefully clenching your teeth. The morning soreness and aches are caused by the strain experienced by the maxillofacial muscles. Since bruxism is a condition that happens during sleep, most patients are not aware of it. Nevertheless, the New Smile Dental Group of Costa Rica cites ADA research studies that indicate bruxism could be present in about 20 to 25 percent of all dental patients.
According to the American Sleep Association:
Bruxism rates are also higher in people with a family history of the disorder, with rates as high as 50%. Males and females are affected at about the same rate.Bruxism is often caused by stress or anxiety, and is also found with increased regularity in highly determined people. Bruxism may also be higher when caffeine or nicotine is consumed before sleep.
Bruxism is generally noticed by loved ones who share a bed with the patient, and it is often diagnosed when the patient has his or her next dental exam. The bruxism mechanism usually involves the lateral movement of the incisors against the canines, which can often lead to tooth decay. Furthermore, bruxism can be problematic for dental implants, crowns, veneers, bridges, etc.
