San Juan, Sep 28 (EFE).– St. Lucia’s government said Monday it planned to allow hunting of three endangered sea turtle species exceeding specific weight limits from Oct. 1 until Dec. 31.

Hawksbill turtles weighing 27 kilos (60 pounds) or more and green and loggerhead turtles weighing more than 34 kilos (75 pounds) can be taken during the period, the Agriculture Ministry said in a statement.

“Any product made from turtle shells or their products are not to be sold or exported, as trade of turtle products are restricted under the Convention for International Trade in Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna,” the ministry said.

Regulations ban slaughtering or selling turtles on beaches or in public areas, as well as online. Turtles can only be sold in designated landing sites and fish markets.

The ministry said hunting of other sea turtles and undersized species was prohibited and anyone violating the law could be fined up to $1,850 (a maximum of 5,000 Eastern Caribbean dollars) for each offense. EFE
