The Rincón de la Vieja Volcano in Guanacaste Costa Rica presented new activity this Sunday at 6:40 a.m. with an eruption column that reached 1000 meters over the crater, 2,916 meters above sea level (9,564.48 ft.) as informed by the National University’s Volcanology and Seismology Research Institute (OVSICORI).

This activity at the Rincón de la Vieja is normal, the last one of importance was registered September 29. The eruptions are of phreatomagmatic origen, in other words, they are a result of the interaction between water and magma, releasing columns of gas an vapors that can be easily seen from different areas of Costa Rica.

The OVSICORI experts continue to monitor the volcano that has been presenting sporadic eruptions since May this year.

When it comes to the Turrialba Volcano in Cartago, it hasn’t registered any eruptions of importance in the last few weeks, but it continues to present a constant emission of gas, vapor and sporadically ash.

The Poás Volcano in Alajuela has remained in relative calm with a stready column of gas and vapor as reported by Dr. Geoffroy Avard, responsible of the Volcanic Surveillance Program.
