Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Wednesday called for the resignation of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the standard-bearer of the high court’s progressive wing who called him a “faker.”

On his Twitter account, Trump said that “Justice Ginsburg of the U.S. Supreme Court has embarrassed all by making very dumb political statements about me. Her mind is shot – resign!”

Ginsburg, 82, on Tuesday not only confirmed to CNN the comments she had made on the weekend to The New York Times, but went farther saying that Trump is a “faker” and criticizing the press for being “gentle” on him by not insisting that he turn over his tax returns, saying “Every other presidential candidate” has done so.

“He is a faker. He has no consistency about him. He says whatever comes into his head at the moment. He really has an ego. … How has he gotten away with not turning over his tax returns? The press seems to be very gentle with him on that,” Ginsburg told CNN.

The justice sparked controversy on the weekend when in an interview published in The New York Times said she could not imagine what the United States would be like if Trump were to win the presidency, a remark which the media and other conservative and progressive jurists criticized saying that it is not appropriate for a high court magistrate to comment in that way.

A few hours before calling for her resignation on Twitter, Trump had said in remarks to The New York Times that he thought it was inappropriate for a Supreme Court justice to become involved in a political campaign, saying that Ginsburg should apologize to her fellow magistrates.

If Trump were elected president, Ginsburg would not only have to rule on policies and measures he might put forward, where her recent comments would raise serious doubts about her impartiality, but she also might have to decide if he could actually become president if there were some anomaly regarding the election itself.

Ginsburg was nominated to the high court by former President Bill Clinton, the husband of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton) in 1993, and in recent years she has established herself as a defender of progressive causes. EFE
