Rohina Bhandari, was a 49-year-old Wall Street executive that loved to dive, she died in November 30 as a result of the injuries caused by a tiger shark attack while scuba diving in the waters of Isla del Coco in Costa Rica.

This is the first incident of this sort that has taken place in the Island, and as a matter of fact one of the very few that have been registered throughout the years in Costa Rica (5 in the last 400 years according to the International Shark Attack File of the Florida Museum of Natural History), where there is a much higher chance of winning the first prize of the lottery than being attacked and killed by a shark.

However, Bhandari’s fiancé, plastic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Rosenthal, feels that perhaps the accident could have been prevented, or at least it shouldn’t have been fatal.

In an interview granted to The New York Post to Gina Daidone, Rosenthal stated “Apparently they didn’t have any protection – the divers or the instructors had nothing to ward off any of these fish, sharks. I don’t understand that aspect of it, that there was no protection for her or for the other guests for that matter… I just feel that the safety precautions they took were not as good as they should have had”.

According to information provided by the Ministry of Environment of Costa Rica, the accident occurred in the area known as Manuelita in the Isla del Coco National Park, the US tourist was in the company of a dive master of last name Jimenez who also suffered severe injuries to one of his legs. The two of them were part of a group of 18 people who were in an expedition with tourism company Undersea Hunter Group, which has been organizing tours to this National Park for many years and apparently have all corresponding insurance policies in place.

Rosenthal remembered his loved one as an outgoing person, fascinated by the wildlife.
