After the resolution of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights which established that same-sex couples should be recognized and guaranteed all the rights including the right to marriage, a same-sex couple will be celebrating their marriage for the first time in Costa Rica this Saturday, January 20, announced daily La Nacion.

The couple is formed by Mario Arias ( Costa Rican) and Robeth Castillo (Venezuelan) a couple that has been together for three years and understand that even though their wedding ceremony will take place Saturday they will still have to wait for the marriage to be officially registered in the Costa Rican Civil Registry since the institution is waiting for recommendations of a commission to determine the necessary changes.

Several other couples are waiting for the new regulations to be implemented by the different institutions to legalize their relationship.

The Arias-Castillo wedding will be open to the public since they want to make it a big celebration and will take place at Bar El 13 in San Jose at 7:30 p.m.

The ruling of the Inter-American Court is of obligatory compliance by all the members of the Organization of American States (20 nations) and ensures that the LBGTI population have their conventional rights guaranteed without any discrimination.

Costa Rica will also have to make the necessary adjustments to facilitate the right of the transgender population to change their name and gender in official documents.
