Rain hasn’t stopped since Saturday night in the province of Limon, the most affected by the cold front in Costa Rica.

The National Emergency Commission (CNE) declared yellow alert in this province as well as the North Zone and Sarapiquí on Sunday night. Communities such as Matina and Cineguita in Limon flooded and over 130 families had to be evacuated and transferred to some of the shelters available. In total, according to the CNE, there had been 45 flood reports; while the Fire Department had provided attention to 111 incidents, the majority relating to fallen trees, billboards that were close to falling and represented a risk, short-circuits , among others.

A dam broke close to a banana plantation property in La Luisa, Matina causing damages in the sector; several rivers an in danger of overflowing.

Route 32 to Limon which had been reopened on Sunday afternoon after clearing some landslides remained open today but was closed again as of 6:30 p.m. as a preventive measure due to the heavy rains and the risk of new incidents.

According to the National Meteorological Institute the strong winds and rain will continue through this Tuesday.
