Heavy rains have affected several areas of Costa Rica because of trade winds that has caused damages in several different communities and roads. This Friday evening the National Emergency Commission (CNE) had already close to 80 reports on incidents in different parts of the country by 10pm.

Landslides and floods have affected the communities of Jimenez, Turrialba, the center of Limon, Cahuita and Valle de la Estrella. In total 26 houses have been affected in Sarapiqui; Route 32, which connects San Jose to Limon, remains closed about 500 meters from the Rio Sucio bridge, and Route 10 which communicates San Jose to Turialba in Cartago also remains closed due to fallen trees and overflowing of the Coronado River.

The Northern Zone and the Caribbean are the most affected sectors of the country, “In the area of Cahuita in the South Caribbean, there’ve been close to 20 incidents, in Turrialba 48, Jimenez 10 and 2 in Limon and Valle de la Estrella”, explained the CNE through a press release.

“The CNE requests that those populations who live close to areas prone to floods and unstable mountainsides remain alert and if rains continue please request shelter in houses of family members or temporary shelters”.

Turrialba is the most affected county with floods, landslides, fallen trees and problems with the electricity service.
