Costa Rica has served as a film set to scenes of several Hollywood movies, here’s a list of some of them:

Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams Some of the scenes of this movie that came out in 2002 were filmed in Manuel Antonio National Park and Arenal Volcano .

After Earth: The sci-fi movie starring Will Smith and son Jaden was filmed near the Arenal Volcano in La Fortuna de San Carlos. Unfortunately this movie was heavily criticized.

After Words: Starring Marcia Gay Harden, this is a movie about a librarian facing a mid-life crisis who decides to travel to Costa Rica. The movie came out in 2015 and many of the scene take place in Costa Rica.

Suicide Squad: The action film was just released in 2016; a secret government agency recruits some of the most dangerous super-villains to form a defensive task force. Starring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, among other great Hollywood names; some of the scenes were filmed in Sarapiquí (Hacienda Sueño Azul) and Pococí, Costa Rica, this are at the beginning of the film in the intro of June Moone, the archeologist played by Cara Delevingne.

Paddington: The cute bear is actually from Peru in the story, but the rain forest shots at the beginning of the movie were filmed in Costa Rica.

Congo: Released in 1995, this action movie is about an expedition to the African Congo that ends in disaster and a team decides to find out what went wrong. It was filmed in 8 locations, one of them being San Carlos, Costa Rica.

The Blue Butterfly: Although not well known, this is an entertaining and inspiring film. Starring William Hurt and based on a true story, this movie was filmed partially in Puerto Viejo, Limon .

1492: Conquest of Paradise: As you can guess from the title, this movie is about Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America. Starring Gerard Depardieu, a lot of the filming took place in Puntarenas.

The Last Full Measure: This is actually a film in the making, a political drama based on a true story on Air Force doctor William Pitsenbarger who saved the lives of many marines ambushed in a battle of the Vietnam War. Back in May this year actors Sebastian Stan and John Savage were in Costa Rica shooting some of the scenes for this movie.

Jurassic Park: Contrary to what many think, none of the scenes were actually filmed in Costa Rica, but footage of Isla del Coco was used in the opening sequence to represent Isla Nublar.
